Abstract
In Butembo, tomatoes are an important part of the daily diet and a source of income for many growers. Production nevertheless relies heavily on pesticides, often with limited technical guidance. The study aimed to detect and quantify selected pesticide residues in fresh tomatoes marketed in Butembo, assess compliance with several international maximum residue limits, and contribute to preventing diseases related to ingestion of pesticide residues and limiting soil and water pollution caused by poorly managed residues. A descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study was conducted among 50 tomato growers. Twelve composite tomato samples were collected from markets in Butembo and analysed at the Government Analytical Laboratory in Kampala using GC-MS and LC-MS/MS. Analytical performance was assessed through recovery experiments on fortified tomato matrix. The survey showed that 80% of growers were unaware of the pre-harvest interval, 94% did not comply with it, 88% stored pesticides in the family home, 70% discarded empty containers in the environment, and only 30% consistently used personal protective equipment. Recoveries ranged from 76.9% to 95.6%, with RSD values of 1.0-2.9%. Mancozeb, total cypermethrins, and avermectin B1a were quantified in all samples, while profenofos was found in 8 of 12 samples. Metalaxyl, acetamiprid, and dimethoate were not detected. Several samples exceeded selected maximum residue limits. These findings support stronger producer training, tighter oversight of pesticide distribution, and routine monitoring of food and environmental residues.
