Abstract
The rapid and unceasing transformation of the environment in which companies operate exposes them to enormous risks and uncertainties. This has led to an increase in the mortality rate of new services during their first year of operation. To sustain their activities and obtain competitive advantages, companies develop strategies such as diversification in our environments. However, the factors promoting this strategy, remain less explored. Moreover, the contribution of this strategy on enterprises performance remains to be well understood. The objective of this study is to identify the determinants of business diversification. It also seeks to assess the contribution of diversification to local development. The study proposes a research model drown on several theories. The model produced was tested and validated quantitatively with a sample of 334 respondents using partial least squares, structural equation modelling. The analysis revealed that risk management influences corporate diversification. Once adopted, the diversification strategy contributes to financial and social performance of businesses. However, a very high level of diversification risks hindering the quality of services rendered and compromising the postulates of corporate social responsibility. Relationships with state actors are to be maintained for effective and sustainable diversification.
